Colorado State Alternative Breaks

13 Volunteers, 1 Week.

Colorado State group picture with their mural

From March 17-21st, a group of 13 students from Colorado State University devoted their spring break vacation to volunteering with APWC through Alternative Breaks. This group of individuals from different backgrounds and experiences (or lack of experience) with domestic violence in the Asian and Pacific Islander community dived in and committed themselves to volunteering.

Throughout the week, the Colorado State volunteers helped us beautify our community center and office. This task wasn't an easy task because APWC had a lot of boxes that needed to be sorted and organized! Now, our community center looks great and gives our clients a more comfortable environment to be in when they come for in-house services. Our community center even has two counselling rooms, making it easier to serve more clients at a time. In addition to organizing our office, the volunteers also helped us paint a beautiful mural for our counselling and conference room. The mural consists of 13 segments or puzzle pieces surrounding APWC’s logo. Each of the volunteers chose a segment on the mural to express what symbolizes freedom in their eyes.

The Colorado State volunteers also engaged clients at our transitional shelter with supportive group activities, including activities to paint tote bags for our 12th Annual Metamorphosis Gala in May, making friendship bracelets, and painting “peace rocks”. On the last day of their service, the Colorado State volunteers took clients from our transitional shelter on a field trip to a park. At the park, kids of all ages and adults had fun playing volleyball, tag, and other activities.

We really loved having the volunteers here and appreciate all of the hard work that they did for us and our clients! It is our hope that each volunteer will keep APWC and their experience with us close to their hearts, even though they’re now back in Colorado.
