AmeriCorps*VISTA Intern Member – Domestic Violence Shelter Services
Position Summary
Address the root causes of domestic violence and homelessness in low-income families from Asian Pacific Islander communities and other communities of color!
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the AmeriCorps*VISTA Intern will work in a team environment to ensure the project sustainability of the Asian Pacific Women’s Center’s (APWC) Transitional Housing Program and increase affordable transitional housing opportunities by expanding APWC shelter services. The Intern will also develop a stronger system of recruiting volunteers for APWC’s various programs. In addition, the Intern will increase resources and develop key linkages to enhance opportunities for shelter clients at APWC.
Asian Pacific Women's Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of affordable housing for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Asian Pacific Women's Center is one of the first transitional housing facilities in the United States to focus on the needs of Asian and Pacific Islander domestic violence survivors by providing culturally sensitive and language appropriate services. APWC’s mission is to empower survivors of domestic violence with self-sufficiency, dignity, and inner peace by providing affordable transitional housing, culturally and linguistically sensitive supportive services, and the necessary knowledge and skills for community members to break the cycle of violence.
Specific Tasks of the AmeriCorps*VISTA Intern are:
- Research possible funding sources from government, foundation, and corporations
- Write 1-2 grant proposals each month to increase funding for current shelter programs and for expansion of additional shelter facilities and services.
- Assist with developing and maintaining APWC's donor database.
- Identify and connect with local colleges, universities, clubs, libraries, and other community resources to recruit potential volunteers.
- Design and develop a volunteer brochure/handout.
- Recruit volunteers at outreach events.
- Assist in the development of a Volunteer Manual.
- Update APWC’s resource and referral guide.
- Research and identify programs and services that APWC can connect with to help clients reach self-sufficiency goals.
- Develop working relationships and build coalitions with other community service providers to enhance APWC’s delivery and quality of services.
Additional Qualifications are as follows:
- Minimum B.A. required.
- Experience in social services and/or program development preferred.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Self-motivation, follow-up, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to details.
- Strong computer skills.
- Ability to establish, cultivate, and maintain relationships with many different types of individuals and groups..
- Comfort working with an economically, racially and ethnically diverse population..
- Ability to work as part of a team or individually.
- Bilingual English and Asian Pacific language preferred.
Salary: Monthly Stipend + Health Insurance + Scholarship Grant
