Asian Pacific Women's Center (APWC) is dedicated to providing a safe haven and support services for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Our mission is to provide an environment that is sensitive to the cultural and language needs of Asian and Pacific Islander domestic violence survivors and their families, as they acquire the necessary skills and personal strength for self-sufficiency and violence-free lives. APWC is also committed to education and outreach, raising awareness about domestic violence, and fostering violence prevention.

Position Summary
APWC’s Community Education and Empowerment Program in San Gabriel Valley area is dedicated to raise awareness about domestic violence in Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities through domestic violence training, educational workshops, participation at API community events, and distribution of culturally and linguistically appropriate educational materials to individuals and community-based organizations. Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the Community Outreach & Education Coordinator is responsible for developing and coordinating programmatic activities in conjunction with community outreach volunteers and interns.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Facilitate culturally and linguistically appropriate educational activities for Asian and Pacific Islander community members and media from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and religious backgrounds;
  2. Maintain and strengthen relationships with community gatekeepers from Asian and Pacific Islander community-based organizations, faith-based institutions, women's associations, university groups, professional associations and informal social networks;
  3. Oversee the production, translation and distribution of informational materials such as brochures, handouts, and flyers of the Community Education and Empowerment Program;
  4. Assist Clinical Supervisor to train and work with community outreach interns;
  5. Conduct intakes for individual survivors of domestic violence, as needed.
  6. Develop and adapt domestic violence curricula that is audience-specific and plan/facilitate/conduct 40 hour domestic violence trainings for APWC staff, volunteers, interns and interested general public;
  7. Attend staff meetings and participate in the preparation of related reports as requested.
  8. Must comply with APWC policies and procedures concerning security, treatment of clients, and program requirements.
  9. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Physical Activity
In the course of performing this job, the incumbent typically spends time standing, walking, sitting, listening/speaking, driving, carrying, and operating other equipment as directed by the Executive Director.

Position Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree or four years of related work experience;
  2. Experience in community organizing or community-based work, preferably in Asian and Pacific Islander communities;
  3. Excellent writing, research and communication skills;
  4. Experience planning and coordinating events;
  5. Strong administrative and organizational skills;
  6. Ability to multi-task;
  7. Availability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends;
  8. Computer skills and knowledge of applications and programs including MS Word, Publisher, internet-based programs; and experience with web design preferred;
  9. Experience in training facilitation and/or public speaking;
  10. Experience in working on violence against women issues preferred;
  11. Familiarity with domestic violence training modules and curricula preferred; and
  12. Proficiency in at least one Asian language preferred
  13. Ability to support the mission and philosophy of APWC which include acceptance of multicultural diversity and empowerment of each women
  14. Ability to maintain professional relationship with residents and staff
  15. Must undergo fingerprinting, security check, TB test, and attend sensitivity training for domestic violence issues, as required
  16. Must have vehicle, valid California Driver’s License and current automobile insurance
